Basic cylinders are used to provide straight-line, "in/out" linear movement for a variety of applications.
There are two basic types; single-acting, and double-acting. Single-acting cylinders develop
thrust in one direction. The piston rod is returned by a fitted spring or some
other external means such as load, mechanical movement, etc. Single-acting cylinders are used in
clamping, marking, and ejection applications. The have lower air
consumption compared with the equivalent size of double-acting cylinders. With a double-acting
cylinder, air pressure may be alternately applied to a piston attached to
a moveable element to drive it in eith direction. This type of cylinder is suitable
when the application requires force in both directions.
